Default What am I doing wrong?

I am trying to cut an angle for a board to go between two post on an outside stair. Since my miter saw does not tilt I have tried to cut the board at the proper angle with the board on edge and the blade rotated. It never fits. What have I done wrong?

I can't really picture what your doing, but the fact that you say that your miter saw doesn't tilt to cut a bevel, then it sounds like you need to go out and get yourself a compound miter saw (i.e. the right tool for the job). Consider a larger blade size to compliment your existing saw.

Otherwise, see if you can create a jig with your existing miter saw, cutting a small lenght of 4x4 at what ever angle you want, then nail/screw/clamp the board to that, then do your cut.

You might be able to use a circular saw to make the cut. Just make sure that you have a good blade. And use a speed square held at the correct angle to guide the saw and set the bevel accordingly.
