    Post Strength garage header

I have a two car garage door that measure 7' x 8'-6" and I want to make it into a single door 8'-16'. The header is 4"-12"-16' and I want to place a 1/4" steel plate lagged to the face of the header or I don't need to do this. The garage is detached and measures 18'-16'.

If you have a one piece solid header from one side to the other, then no you do not need the steel plate. If this is a two piece header, then you'll need to replace those two pieces with a single 4x12x16. No amount of reinforcement will stop two individual pieces from sagging if their central support is removed.
