    Default Handrail finish on Stairs

What would be the easiest way to change (and/or go over)the handrail on my staircase, from a light wood finish to a mahoghany looking finish?
    Thank you for any advice!!!

I'm assuming the railing aready has some finish on it. First you'll need to give it a light sanding with a 120 grit sandpaper.
If it were me, I'd buy a couple of the smallest cans of stain your store sells and try it out right on the railing.
Woods that aren't the specie (mahogany) you want the color of won't come out the same as you might like so all you can do is do some test areas.
If the area you test on isn't to your liking you can sand it off again but I'd try to use the underside of the railing to minimize multiple sandings that are in your face.
