Default Heating in CAlifornia - Furnace or Heat Pump

Can anyone suggest wich way to go with heating in California - use the regular gas Furnace or Heat Pump (do not know if they are used in CA). Can Heat Pump be used for both - AC and Heating?
I have an old gas Furnace Rheem brand (with ducts) and no AC at the moment...
Though maybe switching to Heat Pump will give me both - cool and hot air...? Thank you in advance.

A heat pump in Calif. is a good idea.
For comfort and quiet, I would recommend a staged,
    "variable-speed" furnace with a two-speed heat pump.
Because heat pumps require "special needs",
you need to find someone that knows what's he/she is doing.
