    Default single rotted stud

    Dear Sirs,

    I have a load-bearing (external) wall that has a
rotted stud. The base of the 2x4 is gone and so is
a small section of mudsill. The joist below is still
    hanging on.

This small wood frame house is over 50 years old.
Is this loss of a stud really serious?

How could I brace from the cement block foundation
    to the ceiling joists?

    thanks, Paul serapions@yahoo.com

I would suggest you replace it! One option: go buy a new green "treated" stud, cut it so it fits along side the rotted stud snug (so you'll have to use a hammer to coax it into position), then remove the old stud. I think it would be best to remove the old one as opposed to just leavng it because the moisture it contains could expand and cause problems. Also, check your other studs! Where there's one bad one there could be more! Good luck. Should be a cheap fix.
