My house was built in 1941 and has plaster walls and ceilings. For some reason, the walls along our stairway and upper hall have hairline cracks throughout the walls. Most are random but there are also long vertical cracks. The vertical cracks do not line up with the studs. They seem to be located where wallpaper seams are. We have papered this area twice in order to cover up the cracks. Both times the wallpaper did not stick very well. The seams were constantly coming loose. We hired a professional to hang the paper. After he was done, whole sheets would fall off.
Do you have any idea what causes the cracks? How do we get rid of them? We would like to go back to painting the walls.
