Default Burning Bush - now a burning tree - Prune Help

I have a very large burning bush that I would like to trim and prepare it for next year. It is now chilly 35-45dg's and I was informed that this is a good time to prune it but I am not sure how far down the branch I go. As you can see on the picture attached, the leaves are really only on the very edge of bush which leads me to believe that I need to expose the inside to more sun. My main goal is to keep the bush healthy and not let it grow too large. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You only have growth on the very outside of the branches because no light is getting to the interior of the bush. I've seen Roger Cook address this on TOH and Ask TOH. What he does is thin out about 1/3 of the old branches every year for 3 years. Cut branches out so that light can get to the interior of the bush. I cut back a variegated Dogwood a few years ago and it looked pretty awful the first two years when I was cutting it back. But after the 3rd year it had put out a lot of new growth and it was full and lush looking.

Have you considered moving it to another location and replacing it with something smaller?

I recommend pruning it in the spring.
    HOPE THIS IS HELPFUL!

Thanks everyone. I think I will try trimming it down a bit.
