    Default Windowsill Gardens

When I moved my life to the city two years ago, it didn't take long for me to realize what I'd miss most about my old house in Pennsylvania: my backyard, where I grew up keeping a vegetable garden each summer.

Luckily, my little apartment has three big, beautiful windowsills on which to make things--like herbs, flowers, succulents, even citrus plants salvaged from snacks--grow. Until I get a backyard of my own, my windowsill gardens will have to do. But with buildings stacked up close to each other the way they are in many cities, it can be hard for plants to get the sun they deserve. A city girl's trick: I line my sills with aluminum foil (it doesn't look as tacky as it might sound, and you can always toss it out if you're having a party). It maximizes the light my plants need to thrive.
