Default What type and how old?

My husband and I are in the process of buying our first home. We have found one that we like, however we cannot figure out what type of heating system it has in the basement.

Each room has an old steam radiator in it.

I have attached a picture of what we found in the basement. Does anyone know what it is and how old it is? We're guessing that the white stuff is asbestoses.

It looks like a boiler to me. Try asking if the home owner if the home uses oil for heat. Sometimes the oil tanks are located underground. Also ask the size of the tank(s). It could also be a coal burning unit. And yes that definitely looks like asbestos around the pipes and unit.If you love the house it's worth the cost to have experts remove it. The removal process is very inconvienient and best to do before you move in.
