Default How to fix uneven staining of hardwood floor

I rented a sander and edger and sanded my hard wood floor down raw wood. I then applied miniwax oil based stain. The stain is really blotchy around the perimeter. Is there anything I can do to fix this.... I am so disappointed, the sanding was a ton of work.

The blotchiness occurs because the grain was unevenly opened up. Either the wood was sanded less evenly around the edges or milling marks were left. In any event, I know of no good way to totally relieve the blotchiness. I assume you wiped the stain. The blothiness becomes more prominent at the time you wipe the stain as the surface stain is removed. You might try re-staining the floor, laying the stain out as evenly as possible and then NOT wiping it. Use a lambswool applicator on a stick with long continuous strokes. This will of course somewhat darken the floor, but the blothiness will be much less prominent. If you go this route, be sure to give additional drying time for the stain before beginning your finish coats.
