We live in an old house on a hill. Our backyard has an even area about 20 ft. deep directly behind the house and then the yard begins an ever increasing incline uphill, quite significantly. The flat area of the yard is always muddy/marshy because of all of the runoff that comes downhill. There is also considerable shifting/settling of the house and we have been told it is due to this water issue. The only suggestion we've heard so far about how to remedy this is to dig trenches on either side of the house, run piping with drainage holes (kind of like a whiffle ball) in them and cover them with gravel with the idea being that the water would hit the trenches and run off into the street/gutter. Does anyone agree or disagree with this idea or have a better one?
