Default We need help w/ our banister

We just had the wood floors refinished throughout our entire house, and they look bright and BEAUTIFUL! However, the banister for our staircase is another story...it's dark, waxy, dull, and dingy looking. I asked our floor refinishers whether they could refinish the banister as well, but they advised me that it could be costly (due to time & labor), and they were unsure about the outcome. Any advice on how I can beautify the banister? Should I remove the wax that's already on there? If so, how do I go about doing that? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Use Murphy's Oil Soap (as directed on the bottle) and scrub it good. Then use sandpaper starting with 120 grit and then work your way up to finer grits then finish it off with 0000 (4 "ought") steel wool. After that, use a wipe-on polyurethane per the instructions. The more coats of polyurethane, the better the gloss.
