Default best way to repair holes in floor from vent removal

We had the old heating and air system removed in our 110 year old house and the contractors put in metal pans with vent covers where they removed the vents. I would like to remove these and cover or fill the holes because of the air that comes in around the vent covers. There is no sub-floor and there is no way to get to the bottom of the hardwood floor from underneath. Thanks!

If you can find matching flooring, cut the existing back to the center of a joists and install a patch. Closets are generally a good place to get matching flooring and can then be replace with a mismatch. Staggering the lengths looks best.

Thank you! This makes perfect sense. Been trying to figure it out for quite awhile.
