Default Cutting a new stairwell opening

    Greetings,
I have a 1910 2 story building. It has 2x12x23 floor joists. They run the entire 23ft. and rest in pockets in brick walls on either side. I will be cutting a new well perpendicular to the joists. I will triple the headers and build a wall from the floor to help support the upper floor.

Anyone have any experience in the same situation? any tips?
    Thanks in advance
    Jerome

Make sure you shore things up before cutting anything.

    Measure twice cut once.

As previous poster said, brace and support things first.
Don't knock over any brick walls.....

Jerome, look at the link below it should help you determine how to handle the stairs from start to finish. If you get confused ask questions.

Don't forget to support the supporting wall. If the floor underneath isn't strong enough to support the floor above, too, then you'll either need to beef it up or run support all the way down to solid ground.

Thanks for the advice. Shoring it up will be the major challenge I think. I have 14'7" ceilings. My floor is also made up of 2x12's so it should hold it with no problem. I will let you know how it comes along.

    Thanks again,
    Jerome

***, 14'7'' ceilings....that's one heck of a stringer run. Is there any platforms or winders involved.

Yes I was planning a 10'or so straight run then the difference with a landing and small 4' or so run to the floor. So basically a L shaped staircase.
