    Default Black under wainscot...mold?

While preparing to paint the front room of our 1890's Victorian farm house, I think I have discovered mold. There is tongue and groove wainscot and molding over plaster. Underneath the molding and wainscot the plaster is totally black. I can rub the black off. Does it sound like mold? It has no odor and it is not spotted, it is an even coat. We have lived here for about 6 years and no one has had respiratory problems, so maybe it is not mold. Please let me know your thoughts.

    Warmly, Kate

Sounds more like soot under that wainscot.
