Default Trees and shade killing yard

My yard is very small and I have 5 50 year old sweetgum trees on it. The roots are slowly taking over and the grass is patchy at best. Is there anything I can do to grow some grass without having to cut down the trees? I live in Southern Illinois.

    Probably not.
One of my least favorite trees due to the spikey balls they drop. Can be pretty in the fall though.
Grass needs sunlight, water & soil.

Howdy consider having an arboretist thin the tree limbs to allow more sunlight to reach the grass. Some grass will tolerate the shade better then other might check the web.
