Default Fan for outside air unit

My fathers outside airconditioning units fan will spin freely but won't kick on and off by itself. It just humms. Of course the house won't cool. Any suggestions for him to check?

Sounds like a start capacitor, but you should have an experienced HVAC Co. take a look since there's 220v to the Condenser. Good Luck!!!

I agree with Sten, it is most likely the start capacitor, which is most likely located behind the service panel. And as Sten pointed out the electricity to the unit must be off and caution handling the capacitor. Even though it is probably faulty it can still contain a stored charge that can knock you on your petoot if it isn't discharged first. You can probaly get a replacement capacitor at a local Grainger store.

If you decide to change out the capacitor on your own do it one wire at a time so that it is installed correctly. You can de-energize the cap. by putting a screwdriver across the two spade terminals. This way you won't get zapped andit won't damage the cap. Good Luck!!!
