It sounds like furring strips will be the fix for your problem. You will need to fur out all studs where the cabinets will hang, from there you'll have a couple of choices.
- Fur out the entire wall
- If need be you can go back to the existing stud plain once past the cabinets and have a visible transition in the wall
- "Cheat" and reduce the thickness of the furring strips across several of the studs past the cabinets so that the wall maintains a flat look.
