    Post cardboard walls

I removed the wallpaper in my master bathroom to find what appears to be brown cardboard underneath. There is a white coating which looks like a layer of primer, but in some places the brown cardboard was exposed. Where the shower head comes out of the wall and where the shower wall begins, there appears to be warping where the area was oversaturated with moisture. I want to paint the room but I have no idea if I can. Help.

I'm guessing that a previous owner installed vinyl covered Masonite, and when that started failing they covered it with wallpaper. If the "cardboard" is swollen and damaged, you need to remove it and deal with whatever other damage there may be from water intrusion over the years. After that, you can do pretty much anything you want.
