Default Add floor to area above stairs

We down sized to our rental house and now find we are short on space. We want to add a floor above our stairs. The entry hall , which is where one wall is has a 20 foot ceiling. The stairs are normal - 4- 5 feet wide - the floor would end up being 10 ft long - what size bracing would we need for support (walls are already there)? We were thinking a 2X6 about 1 foot high . Let us know what you think. Thanks John B

A 2x6 that is 1 foot high would be a 2x12. If you match the size of the existing floor joists you won't have anything to worry about nor any weird transitions in the ceiling.
I suffer from CDO ... Its like OCD, but in alphabetical order, LIKE IT SHOULD BE!!!
