I bought this 1920's Wisconsin bungalow turned duplex and it came with this little metal thing screwed to the wall trim in the hallway.

It looks like it's positioned down near the floor just above the 1/4 round trim. Is it possibly a door stop, used to keep a door from banging the baseboard and damaging it?

Perhaps the three small holes near the bottom were used to hold a ball/arm connected to the door to keep it from closing.

Is there a door in the area (or used to be???) that this lines up with?

My parents have one just like it in their house and we have no idea what it is. They live in downtown Green Bay, WI and the house is very old. It still has it's coal chute intact. If you ever find out what it is, please let me know .

Can't help you identify the object, but it probably says GILT not CILT
The "Senior Member" designation under my name doesn't mean I know a lot, it just means I talk a lot.I've been a DIYer since I was 12 (thanks, Dad!). I have read several books on various home improvement topics. I do not have any current code books I can refer to. I was an apprentice plumber for two years.

I also have no idea, but do notice it has 3 'key slots" at the bottom as if somethng would slip into them and be secured.
