    Default Tile patio tables

I would like to make some patio tables. I have the metal bases and need to make tops for them. I want to make the table tops with ceramic tile and was wondering what would be the best material to use under the tile for the table top base. I do not want to use wood because of expansion issues. I was thinking about light weight concrete but I have read that concretes are not good because concrete has compression strength but not tensile.

Not looking for the material to use as the top (finish) surface the table, I plan on using ceramic, granite, or porcelain for the finished top but what I am looking for is what should the top material be set on, the base material that is covered with the ceramic etc.

What about cement backer board cut to fit? Made for that type of application, readily available at your local supply house.
