    Default Soldering Threaded Brass Fittings

After taking the downspout off of my 50 year old tub, I found the brass threaded pipe was corroded. I got a new downspout and new threaded brass pipe, but when I taped it and screwed it into the existing female connection it began to leak. There looks to be a bit of the old pipe in the threads of the female fitting, but other than that it seems to be ok.

My question is, rather than replacing the female connection, can I solder the threaded brass fittings together, or will the solder not run properly into the fittings?

Clean the debris out of the threads the best you can, then tape and pipe dope the threads and reinsert the neck. You could probably get things clean enough to solder, but that would create a whole new problem if and when it came time to service the drain again.

So just use pipe dope and no solder? This is not a drain, it's the joint where the hot and cold come together then lead to the downspout.

Gotcha! No, don't solder. Use Rector Seal pipe dope, it's a nice gooey dough-like consistency that works really well and doesn't typically glue parts together. Another thing with solder is that it doesn't fill gaps too well, it needs close mating surfaces.
