I am reinstalling a Kohler toilet after having a new floor installed in the bathroom. The rubber gasket between the tank and the base wasn't in great shape, so I went to the plumbing supply store and bought a new one, along with three new brass bolts with round rubber gaskets. The gasket has three posts which go through the holes in the bottom of the tank, with holes in the center for the bolts. When I put the new gasket on the bottom of the tank, I noticed the posts on the new gasket didn't fit as tightly as the old ones, and more importantly, the posts extended well past the bottom of the tank, maybe a quarter or three-eighths of an inch. My question is, do I just go ahead and install the tank and tighten the bolts as far as they'll go? Or should I trim off the the gasket posts flush with the bottom of the tank, and let the round washers and gaskets that came with the bolts make the seal. Obviously I don't want this thing to leak. Thanks.
