Where I live there is only one. An on-line search should come up with it.

Most locations have a public-service contract with the government where only one cable company is allowed to operate in that area. If you have choices, consider yourself very, very lucky!

Actually we have comcast for cable and verizon over fiber optic(Fios). Fios doesn't cover all locations yet. It makes for some interesting commercials where they alternately bash each other or say how much better they are.
Don't forget satellite. You can get that everywhere.

    A few good sources:
    • Ask your neighbors
    • Ask your city or county development department
    • Ask a local real estate agent or broker

Considering that cable companies also offer phone, and Internet, and increasingly phone companies are offering both Internet and TV service, and some areas have independent Internet companies using their own fiber or wireless networks to offer TV and phone service, you should be looking for more options than just cable companies.

So with that in mind, what service are you looking for: TV, phone, or Internet?
