Question Vaulted Ceiling Insulation In the Deep South

I live in South Louisiana, where the weather is hot and humid most of the year. I have new construction with a vaulted ceiling on the second story. The contractor installed a ridge vent but no soffit vents. I'm about to insulate the ceiling and am now wondering if I should go back and install soffit vents. I have heard that it is not necessary in warm southern climates. What would be my best course of action

Yes, install the soffit vents - the roof insulation should NEVER touch the underside of the roof, allowing for air flow.

If he claimed there wasn't enough room for insulation AND air space he was fibbing.

I have installed baffles to allow for 1" of airspace.

Your soffit should have a continuous full length vent, not the little individual vents spaced several feet apart. In some cases, contractors use something that resembled peg board for the soffit board.

Edit: What you may have heard is that you don't need a vapor barrier. If you are real close to the coast where the dew point is often higher than the setting on the air conditioner air, then you may very well not need a vapor barrier. There are only a few places where this is true and some of those few places are in southern LA.
