A couple of years ago I had a new high efficiency gas fueled furnace installed. Almost directly above the furnace on the 1st floor is a "double wide" cold air return. When the furnace turns on there is an audible whistle that drives the wife crazy. If I loosen the register at one end and pull the register away from the wall a few inches, the whistle stops. Weirder, if I install the cold air return grill upside down, the whistle stops as well. What causes this whistle and what should I do to eliminate the whistle (with the cold air return installed correctly?)
Re: Furnace Whistle
The whistle is probably coming from around the perimeter of the grill. some foam weatherstripping around the perimeter should fix it.
