Question anyone know what this brown area would be?

I noticed yesterday this brownish-soft area on foam insulated area in my crawlspace which I was working on. Thanks.

A stain from the tannins in the wood?

I don't think that is what it is. I wonder as it feels soft in the darkest area, and my finger sort of "sunk" into it whether something at one point tried to set-up a dwelling - a mouse or perhaps bees/wasps, etc.? Would that make any sense?

In any event, it is covered up (but accessible) as I've been adding R19 pink insulation along with a thin R1.0 Corning pink "sheath" to hopefully help with the thermal bridging I'm getting to the floor above. The foam seemed to work well for drafts but there is a lot of exposed beams and it has been one cold winter here in NJ.

I wonder if it's where the foam chemicals didn't quite mix together properly.

Well, that seems like a possibility. I don't know enough about this foam stuff to know.
