Default Removing old banisters for re-use

I have an 1870s farmhouse that unfortunately is beyond saving, but I want to remove and re-use the beautiful banister that runs all the way up to the third floor. Is there any way short of cutting it to remove it at the joints undamaged? If it has to be cut off, where is the best place to make the cuts, at the joints or where?

    Thanks!

I would consult with a local stair builder and/or restoration contractor who is familiar with banisters in your area. They can tell you how the thing was installed and the best way to salvage it. Be up front with them that you want to do the work yourself and that you will pay for their consult time.
I suffer from CDO ... Its like OCD, but in alphabetical order, LIKE IT SHOULD BE!!!
