It can't hurt, but the odor would increase. Why are we adding water and not a plunger?

Depends on what's clogging the toilet, if it's fat or grease, then yeah, warm water will help break it loose. If it's what normally goes down a toilet, then warm water isn't going to do anything at all.

Plunger it first, if that doesn't work, pull the toilet and turn it upside down in the yard and back flush it with a garden hose, there is probably a toy or toothbrush, or some other thing that shouldn't be in there, lodged in the neck.

You can also use a toilet auger, which won't damage the porcelain. And in extreme cases, you'll have to remove the toilet, bring it out to the yard and blast what's inside away.

If clean water flushes well, but "stuff" continually gets hung up and clogs, do as Spruce suggests and pull the toilet. It is probably that pencil or toothbrush that the little ones threw in there that is catching all the paper trying to pass. Obviously, plain water passes by with no problem . An auger will normally just pass on by the slim pencil too.

Those were called Tree Tots in our house. Little wooden people that kids wanted to flush.
