    Default Replace old shower handles

Can anyone tell me if I can replace old screw on handles ( those ugly "crystal" knobs) with newer lever type handles that have no obvious screw in the picture?

Yes you can, your big box store, and probably your neighborhood hardware store will have kits. Your finish options may be limited though.
It's this old house, not this built after your dad was born house.

If you don't see the screws, it's because they are concealed under a tiny plate. Remove it with a utility knife.

Locate the replacement handles and see how they are assembled and reverse the process.
