    Default refinishing cedar chest

I sanded old finish from exterior of an old cedar chest ( for blankets, sweaters etc) and would like to know what to use, if anything, to preserve wood without changing beauty of the wood. The interior was and will remain untouched to maintian natural aroma. Is a poly semi gloss or satin OK for the exterior of the chest?

I would go with shellac as my personal preference.

    Brian,

Whereas a polyurethane would be the toughest finish, many woodworkers dislike its somewhat plasticy look. As Bp suggests, shellac gives a warm glow without the synthetic look. After the shellac, you could apply a furniture wax also.
