    Default plaster veneer--blue board or green board in bathroom?

    Hoping someone can help clear up disagreement between husband and contractor. We are having blue board with plaster veneer for renovation instead of drywall. For the bathroom, my husband thinks we need green board with something over that then plaster veneer over that. Contractor says blue board with plaster veneer is fine. I just don't want mold and mildew. Any thoughts???

    Sorry,

    The contractor and DH is correct. The MR (greenboard) doesn't really get you anything a decent coat of paint has to offer. The purple stuff is about the same as the MR board.

    TO avoid mildew;

    1- Install and use a very good exhaust fan
    2- Use the window
    3- A well designed shower allows for ventilation when not in use OR leave the door ajar
    4- Primer with Zinsser or Kilz oil based then a decent latex top coat(s)
    5- Use 100% silicone in the wet areas as latex caulk = mold food
    6- A surface applied membrane as your shower waterproofing holds far less water than a traditional vinyl liner. Or use a bathtub in place of a pan.

    So, my husband put green board on the ceiling before contractor started, contractor put blueboard on walls. Should they plaster over it all and call it a day?

    If the veener plaster is a USG product than USG Imperial board must be used.
    If **** Bond is the Veener than you have to use Kal-Board.
    If it is any other brand check with the Manufactor for the proper board.

    I dunno about the bonding, but I'm very sure the pH of the plaster is so high that it will not allow mold growth. What you put on top of the plaster is another story.....

    Plaster is a porous material Also it will retain moisture.
    Plaster is conducive to the growth of Black Mold.
    Plaster must be wet or very damp for the mold to grow.
    Raw plaster can retain a lot of moisture.
