It can be difficult to sand (unless you ue a drum sander with #1 grits) because the adhesive and rubber ball up and clog the abrasive. I like the upper body workout I get from scra-ping wood floors. Use a narrow sharp scra-per with the sharp corners rounded over. Then a rental sander and 80 grit will make quick work of it. Beware that some asbestos theoretically could be present. Wear a respirator, and burn your clothes afterwards
Remove not the ancient landmark, which your fathers have set.
