Default Installing trap in limited space

We are trying to install a trap under bathtub. Problem is that the tub pipe is almost directly over the main pipe going into sewer, with very little space between the pipes. Is there a way to install a trap maybe out to the side from the tub pipe and back into the main pipe going to sewer. Thanks!

The horizontal pipe connected to the bottom of the tub doesn't have to be in a straight line with the tub. Making that pipe off to one side will mean the tub's breather / overflow pipe will not be plumb. This will allow the trap to be next to the connection to the sewer.

    Will that work?

Traps are placed directly on the fixtures simply because that is almost always the best place for them and it usually makes for easier servicing, but that doesn't mean it has to be there- it can be located downstream and it will work just fine. Do try to keep it as close to the fixture as practical and keep future service needs in mind. If at all possible, use 'sweep' bends instead of 'ells' prior to the trap for lessened flow resistance and less chance of a clog.
