Default Chimney with no fireplace in my 1905 old house

The previous owner of this loveable old house took a sledge hammer to the living room wall where the fireplace should have been. There was no fireplace, but now a huge hole in the wall with not so nice brick underneath. I don't understand??? I live by myself, and am very interested in how my house came to be!

Many houses of that era were built with the use of heating stoves in mind rather than a firplace.

Perhaps there was once a very nice fireplace there that a prior owner took with them or sold to make an extra buck or two. One of the joys of an old house is all of the stupid things prior owners did.
It's this old house, not this built after your dad was born house.
