Default 111-year-old 2nd floor toilet waste line dumps into kitchen ceiling...help?

The waste line from a 2nd floor toilet occasionally dumps water through our kitchen ceiling below it.
We can not seem to re-create or "make" it happen.
Any ideas what is causing it, and what we can do to remedy this?
We have replaced the kitchen ceiling twice.
    Thanks!

A bad wax seal on the toilet and a slow drain. If the drain is partially blocked it may occasionally be filling up and leaking around the seal. I would try snaking the line and replacing the seal.

another possibility is that the cast iron flange or 90 degree elbow could be rusted through allowing water to occasionally leak out.

If it's just the wax ring - it's an easy fix.
If it's a blockage in the line - it's an easy fix.
But if it's a hole in the drain line due to old age - it's a more expensive fix.
