Default How to Seal Window & Door Frames before attaching siding.

We are adding new siding to a 1920s house and plan on keeping the wooden window frames. As the house did not have sheathing behind the old siding, we are adding sheathing and Tyvek house wrap. What would be the best way to seal the areas around the window & door frames before the siding is added? I've seen on episodes of TOH, where they put what looked silver metallic tape to the edges of the window & door frames to prevent water from getting behind the frames. What is this tape & is that the best way to seal them off or is this only used when replacing windows? Thanks for the help.

What goes around the windows and doors is called flashing. In the old days there was one kind, it came in a roll. And when there was no roll we used roofing paper, cut to size. But today, there are various products, but guess what, they are doing the same thing.

More important is how you apply the flashing. You have to work it together with the house wrap in this order:
First wrap the bottom and sides of the window with Tyvek (not the top yet).
Now the bottom flashing, side flashing and top flashing.
Then Tyvek the top of the window.

This way the window/door is fully wrapped.
