Default Alternative to custom door jamb?

We want to replace our bedroom doors with a better grade. I'm not sure I'm using the correct terminology, but here goes. One of the jambs is 9" deep, instead of the usual 5". The existing door is set 4" into the jamb. Could I use a standard prehung door and jamb, and just trim out the 4"?

Yes, and you can also finish it in such a way that nobody could tell you've done that.

it's called craftsmanship.....when done correctly by a skilled professional you wouldn't be able to tell the difference

    I see. It's probably a toss-up cost-wise then; a custom-made jamb vs a skilled craftsman.

it will be alot cheaper to hire someone to do it right than to have a custom jamb made. should only take about 2-3 hours to install a new door and trim it out properly.
