Default Which joist hanger to use for outside porch

Which hanger should I use to attach 2x8 joist to the rim/ledger and also 2x8 blocking to the joists?

Would it be these -- http://www.menards.com/main/tools-ha...173-c-8845.htm

    or these -- http://www.menards.com/main/tools-ha...181-c-8845.htm

    or some other?

    Why are they 2x6-8 and 2x8-10 ?

2x8 2x10 is the better option

Gizmo is absolutely correct: use the bigger hanger. Then fill all holes with exterior quality nails.

Hangers say 10d and 16d HDG.

It seems like it's either swinging a hammer, buying a mechanical fastener gun (maybe.. if they drive 16d), or a palm nailer.

Should I consider the palm nailer?

a hammer is fine, if you want to spend the money a palm nailer is alot cheaper than a "bosch sure shot" joist hanger nailer.

if i was only doing one deck i would do it with a hammer and joist hanger nails. they sell the nails at the big box stores.

The hardware (hanger) says to user 10d or 16d common -- those joist hanger nails are much shorter is what I understand. The angled (toenailed) 16ds will pass through the hanger, the joist, and into the ledger. The ones going only into the ledger, will pass through ledger, and into the house rim.

I've always used nails as follows:
    - The nails into the header: 1-1/2" long.
    - The nails into the joist: 2-1/2" long, so they go into the header as well.

Simpsons says to use 10d (single 2x hangers) and 16d (doubles, etc) - even for the ledger side if I read their info correctly. I guess it's not going to matter much to me -- I may as well go with the larger nail. Thinking seriously about a palm nailer though.

Did a little experimenting with a palm nailer.

    Are screws an option?

Unless the manufacture says you can use screws, and most likely they dont, then you cant. The difference between shear forces of screws and nails are drastically different.

Also, remember ear protection when using a hammer so long
