    Exclamation Replacing shower surround

We are remodeling our bathroom and are trying to figure what we need to put behind the shower walls. We had the old plaster and wood slats on the walls and want everything to line up again when we are done. Can we just secure the surround the wall or do we need to put something behind it like backer board, we don't want to put the drywall back there because then we will have to shim out the rest of the wall so that it all lines up. HELP!

If its fibreglass one-piece then just fix it to the studs.

It is not a all in one it comes in three seperate pieces for the surround and then the tub. We are completely gutting it down to the studs. We think that we will have to put something behind it so that we don't have to move the plumbing. We figured that there was about an 1/2 inch behind it before. It was put in about 6-7 years ago and they did not tear the walls out that just secured it to the plaster.
