we've recently bought a house in Central PA with a yard that wasn't taken care of for a few years. as we've been cleaning up the yard, we've encountered a number of ticks on us and on our dog. any suggestions on a pet safe yard treatment to help eliminate the ticks?
I favor napalm for that, too, personally... haha!
Seriously, go to a pet supply store, they should have what you need. I take it you want to spray the entire yard, right?
Be sure to get frontguard or the like for your pets and as I'm sure you're doing, inspect your pets and yourselves every day. From what I've heard and read, the 'experts' say this will be a bad flea and tick year.
If you're looking for a holistic or naturalistic means, try the Jerry Baker website (surely he still has one), and he'll give tips on what you can mix together and use in your hose sprayer.
Of course, keep the grass and brush cut and trimmed.
Back again... here are a couple things you might think about using...
This you can mix up in a bottle and spray on your dogs with no harm
Tick & Fly Repellent:
2 cups of white vinegar
1 capful of Avon Skin so Soft,
1 cup of water
1 tblsp eucalyptus oil
Shake well to mix and spray on the dog's fur.
try Diatomaceous Earth (this is a natural product which is made
from tiny fossilized water plants. Diatomaceous Earth is a naturally occurring siliceous sedimentary mineral compound from microscopic skeletal remains of unicellular algae-like plants called diatoms - it's not harmful to people or animals, but the microscopic edges are sharp and will cut the insects and make them die).
Just sprinkle a light dusting of it on your yard with a hand duster, also where they sleep.
You can order it from these people if you can't find it locally
Home Depot has a few options but this one appears to be the best option:
EcoSmart 32 oz. Mosquito and Tick
DE works wonders!
Especially if you got kids or pets because the stuff is a harmless.
Though I still do not recommend ingesting the stuff. mostly do to the bad taste
