    Default Large holes in sheathing

We are building a new 2 story home. We discovered rather large holes punched through the sheathing that is applied to the trusses for the second floor. These holes are larger than your fist and are all along the top of the sheathing attached to the trusses. We asked the builder why these holes are there and he said they punched the holes through with a hammer so they could put ropes through the holes to hoist the trusses to the second floor. We were told this is common practice but we are concerned. Has anyone seen this done?

The only trusses that are sheathed are the gable ends & they aren't really trusses often times so they need sheathing to keep them rigid.
A builder has to hoist them up with a crane, so punching the holes in them is one way to do it. It doesn't hurt them or their structural integrity

Should they be repaired? We have exterior sheathing on trusses plus interior trusses with sheathing too. My concern is keeping out animals (e.g. bats, and so on) that may get into the attic via holes in the exterior sheathing and then make it into the attic through the holes in the interior sheathing.

its very common. youll also see it in walls once the windows are in if there is no where to run air lines and power chords to the outside of the house.. all its a easy fix. just a patch of plywood on the inside of the hole screwed on through the outside
fire up the saw and make some dust
