    Default Insulation of exterior walls

I have an 1850's Cape, I am installing new windows, when I started to remove exterior trim I found that I have shingles over clapboard where the clapboard is nailed directly to the post and beam. It looks like I have to strip all siding off and install sheathing at this point what is the best method of insulating from the outside and how do I address vaper barrior for interior side of insulation?

Your best bet would be a closed cell foam, it is its own vapor barrier. another advantage to the spray on closed cell foam is that it will fill the irregular spacing of a post and beam house better than batts.
