Smile Small Hole In Wooden Closet Door

I accidentally created a small hole in my wooden closet door. The door is not solid. How can I repair the hole? The hole is about 3/4 of an inch in length and less than 1/2 inch in width. The hole does show that the door is hollow.

Thanks for any and all advice.

Is this a painted door or stained wood?

If the hole is near the top or bottom and the broken wood just pushed inside, you might be able to drill a hole on that edge, push the wood back out as best you can from the inside, and if it's nearly in place use some expanding spray foam to press it the rest of the way out. Use just enough foam- too much may push the veneer off the door framing or create a bulge. I've done this on some rental homes with some pretty good sized holes to save doors- the better cases left the damage undetectable! Another 'fix' is to see if that door can be swapped with a matching closet door so the hole is inside the closet and less noticeable.
