Default removing stopper from bathroom sink

The 'stopper' is stuck in my bathroom sink....the metal one. It is no longer attached to the lever that raises and lowers it. It is so tight water will not seep out. Any way to remove this without removing pipe?

Remove the screw ring that holds the stopper in place and wiggle a flathead screwdriver around.
