I am in the process of doing some upgrades to a previously remodeled hay loft on the 2nd floor of a mid-1800's barn. At present there are two center columns bracing the roof (hope that's the proper description - I'm not familiar with the proper terms for things).
In addition, there are what appear to be some sort of wall braces that are attached to studs on the outside walls, and extend through the floor at approx. 45 degree angle, and fasten to the floor joists below.
My question is: does anyone know if these serve any actual purpose, or can they be safely removed (as they intrude into the living space) since there are columns in place?
Hope I've explained this well enough, thanks for any feedback!
