Inaccessible crawl-space attic?
My house has a 1945-vintage extension with a low-sloped roof... and as far as I can tell, absolutely no access to the attic space. There's an end-wall vent, but even if I dismounted the cover it's too small for an adult to crawl through. A few small soffit vents as well.
I don't like unmaintainable spaces on principle... and I'd really like to find out, and perhaps improve, what's up there in the way of insulation. (I know the pros would probably just fill it with blown-in, but...
So what I'm wondering is how unreasonable it would be to try to open a space between ceiling joists from inside and put in an access hatch. Would this actually make sense, or am I just asking for trouble? And is anyone going to be bent out of shape if the hatch goes up from inside a closet?
Or might there be an existing access that everyone has somehow missed?
