We recently bought a house that was built in 1990 and has popcorn ceilings. Apparently this will be a real pain and very messy to remove. Also the condition of the ceiling is pretty bad and might mean replacing the drywall altogether. Of course the insulation is blown in and there are several really bad patch jobs, a bunch of loose tape and some areas didn't get enough screws in the first place and look like they are about to fall down. So I guess my question comes under the heading of "might as well". How feasible would it be to tear down the drywall, spray foam and drywall under the roof like you would to finish an attic bedroom, then dress up the exposed rafters with nice wood? I know you can't change the trusses, but would this idea work without compromising any of the structure? Or would it just cost way more than it's worth?
