    Default TV show statement clarification

On PBS Alabama (Mobile) broadcast 1/12/13 it was stated not to use drywall screws to fasten an addit. flr tbr to an exist. beam because they are too brittle. Quest: can deck screws be used?
Second: a rule of thumb for calc. the ht. of flr joists was given [(span divided by 2) + 2]. Can that rule also be used for roof rafters. Esp. here on the coast w/ no snow load? Thanks.

    1. Drywall screws rust and break off. Deck screws are fine, also ring shank nails are fine. Best is to ask your building department.
    2. Your building department, a general contractor or a local architect can give a good answer for the required rafter size in your area.
